Frequently Asked Questions
Every job is different, but our approach is the same – to ensure that you and we understand the project so that there are no surprises and to be entirely open. If anything changes along the way we will agree any additional costs or cost savings with you.
Permitted development rights are a national grant of planning permission which allow certain building works and changes of use to be carried out without having to make a planning application. Permitted development rights are subject to conditions and limitations to control impacts and to protect local amenity.
In some cases, planning limitations will preclude the use of PVC windows. Often timber windows will have smaller frame profiles and more glass area. PVC windows may require less frequent maintenance but our windows are hand made from the finest woods and painted ready for fitting.
Lime plaster is a traditional type of mortar used to cover the surface of internal walls and ceilings before painting. Records of it being used date back many centuries to northern Jordan.
It is made up of a mixture of lime, sand and water — sometimes fibres such as animal hair are added to strengthen the mix and to ensure a good bind with the substructure.
The lime for the plaster is a product of limestone, chalk or seashells formed from calcium carbonate that have been burnt to produce quick lime.
Hampson is driven by improving the efficiency of your home whether by using insulating plasters, roofing membranes, wood fibre insulation or, where needed, modern insulation. We try to introduce sustainable products and processes where we can, working empathetically with your property. In the end though we will find the best solution to improve the thermal and insulation properties of your home and also manage moisture content and breathability too. We work with underfloor heating, as an example, where a traditional “wet” heating system is not viable.
In most cases it is recommended to use paints, limewashes and distempers which are breathable and suitable for traditional buildings and plasters.
There are a number of suitable paints available but a local specialist we work with is Rose of Jericho based in Dorset. Their traditional paints are available in a large range of traditional and modern colours with the highest quality pigments used.
Whilst Permitted Development may allow some work to be done without a formal application for planning you should make enquiry through a local architect or your local planning authority to ensure that you comply with current legislation, including building regulations.
We would be happy to help you.
Absolutely. Working with other professionals is key to what we do and we have years of experience in assisting in design element, practical solutions and the subsequent building work. These projects are collaborations between you, your architect and us – working as a team to deliver the best results.
Given the cost of energy we will work with industry experts on including sources of renewable energy into your home, whether it is ground source heat pumps as part of other groundworks, solar/PV panels on a suitable roof or whatever is the most effective solution, delivering the best return.
We prefer to be involved from the start and work from the foundations upwards.
We are experienced in construction infrastructure, drainage, foundations etc. and work with experts to add value such as renewable energy sources where we can, by thinking more widely from the very beginning.
Yes we have full liability cover and ensure that any contractors we use have to.
